Journaling For Career Growth And Work-Life Balance

Feel More Fulfilled In Your Career By Using These Journal Prompts To Reflect

We spend a lot of time working - whether you take on a traditional 9-5, the responsibilities of keeping a home and/or raising children, small jobs here and there, part-time work, or you piece together some combination of it all. Working takes up a significant portion of our adult lives. Some aspects of this can be incredibly rewarding, but most of us will experience periods of time where it is not. It is up to us to reflect on this, and create boundaries that allow us adequate time for rest, relaxation, and fun.

Below I provided a list of journal topics that can help you sharpen your perspective on your career. These can be something you ponder alone in a journal, with a trusted partner, or in therapy. Pick one that you feel comfortable and safe exploring and spend the time necessary to dive into it. The answers to these questions are often lengthy and not very concise. I encourage you to lean into this! Exploring these lengthy ramblings is how we grow and hone our minds to what we truly want.

Before Your Next Therapy Session Or Your Next Journal Session Consider:

  • How do you define success?
  • How was success defined by your family? What parts of this definition do you agree with? What parts do you disagree with?
  • How important is your work to your identity as a whole?
  • Do you have a dream job? If so, what is it and why do you feel drawn to it?
  • What does your ideal work week look like?
    • Do you have time for rest and relaxation?
    • Do you have time to spend alone?
    • Do you have time to spend with loved ones?
    • What barriers exist in achieving this?
  • When you take time off work, how do you make sure you feel relaxed and fully charged during and afterward?
  • How do you want to feel before, during, and after work?
  • What makes you feel respected and valued in regards to the work you do?
  • What do you aim to accomplish in your work?
  • What employer values do you prioritize when looking for a job? Why are these important to you?
