Beyond the Gender Binary

Embracing Authentic Gender Expression

Beyond The Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Manon was such a joy to read. This little book is short but full of thoughtful reflection on the experience of growing up as a non-binary person of color in America. They take the reader along on their journey in exploring gender identity and expression and challenge transphobic narratives and arguments that are seemingly ever-present in the cultural zeitgeist.

There is so much to gain from other peoples' stories - especially when the story being told is deeply personal while simultaneously prompting reflection on the reader's own lived experiences. As they walk the reader through pivotal moments and realizations they have experienced, they include commentary that highlights their relevance in our own lives.

At the end of the book, Vaid-Manon identifies and breaks down the arguments made by those that up-hold the gender binary. Their counter to these arguments is not only elegant and concise - it is also very approachable. Their writing in this section of the book reaches across the aisle to the folks that are rooted in their belief of the gender binary and encourages them to see the broader reality. This section of the book also brings words to those that feel they have to defend their identity on a day-to-day basis. Along with being validating, it provides readers with language that they can use to educate people in their lives when they have the energy to do so.

I would recommend this book to anyone! If you are non-binary, trans, wanting to understand your own gender identity and expression, or would like to be a better ally to this community, this is an excellent way to spend an afternoon. While reading this book, I couldn't help but feel Alok Vaid-Manon's warmth, kindness, and desire to create positive change through their words. If you read this book and would like to explore more of their work like I did, I encourage you to check out their website.
